Battteries are in....care package received

Interstate Battery of Hawaii....

Did the right thing and showed up on time. Changed out the old for eight new 6VDC golf cart style units. Quick and efficient they were. The wiring harness fit fine and installation went well. New batteries shopuld greatly reduce the generator run time. Near the end, it was running 3.5 hrs day. Now should be at 1.5 - 2 hrs day.

UPS brought a GPS chipset, ipod, a magazine and 3 20 micron filters for water system.

Jib halyard was respliced spliced as it had shown signs of wear. Devon used a new fid set that was provided from Port Townsend Rigging http://www.porttownsendrigging.com/

Tanks are full and the boat is bound for theWest side of Molokai.

boat work day

ta yes
Today is a boat work day.
The new battery set is scheduled to be delivered later today. That means lotsa moving heavy (90 pound) batteries and getting them all re-wired.
The fabrication man, Jon Wayte, did a great job on the boom parts.
He delivered em at 6:15 am!
Two days ago, a great guy....Herb Fuller of Reliable Yacht Care stopped by and helped with our refridgeration solenoid problem. The RIGHT parts are being overnighted from Florida to Hawaii thanks to him.
Got to leave this damn expensive ($120/day) marina and head to Lahaina!!
sail on.

Crew changes

All good things must come to an end.

Mark and Nikki have made the decision not to continue on. Devon and Dustin plan to sail double handed and continue the journey. It seems they might "pick up" crew in Honolulu or Lahina.
Mark will be sorely missed. He has been with the program sincethe boats purchase. He lived aboard since early March 2007. His electrical skills and knowledge contributed greatly. He endured harsh living conditions and long days to get this far. Thanks Mark. Fair winds.

Nikki has been aboard since May 16. She helped provison and prepare the boat for crossing. Her self taught radar skills were helpful. As was her metal polishing ability. Thanks Nikki.

They both fly out Wednesday night late and arrive in Las Vegas Thursday morning.

Thursday afternoon the boat is scheduled to leave Ko Olina and head to the free annchorage ??in Honolulu. It will be a very short stay then on to Maui.

On to Oahu

Boat left Kauai Sunday Aug 5 and sailed all night to Ko Olina Marina http://www.koolinamarina.com/

on southwest corner of Oahu.

The goal her is to load aboard new batteries and have some repairs fabricated to the boom

Jon Wayte http://www.waytetoolandmachine.com/index.html met Devon aboard and the have agreed on a price to repair the metal that had fatigued.

Interstate Batery of Hawaii was a bit of a dissappointment. After prepaying 2 weeks in advance, and being told the batteries were in stock.....Devon called Monday andwas told "the shipment gets in on Wednesday". Bummer. The reason for 2 weeks pre pay was to ensure that batteries would be standing by upon arrival. Let's hope Interstate Batteries delivers Thursday as promised. Hey it's only 2 extra days at a multi million dollar marina. grrrr.

The boat and crew are safely tucked in to the harbor at Lihue. Sitting at anchor just behind the breakwater. The boat needs some repairs and the crew needs a rest. They should be here until Sunday 8/5/07.

Costco, WAl Mart and UPS is nearby. Cell phones work (except Devons).

Devons Aunt Tracey and Uncle Mike are moving to Nelson, New Zealand today.!

almost there!!

Hi Devon and crew;

By now you should be almost in sight of land....maybe you are...hooray you made your first ocean crossing in a boat you guys fixed by yourself. Congrats.

you should be headed to Lihue...
Niwillwilli Light at entrance is
N 21 57 , W 159 20

My calculations put you there late Sunday ....please wait until daylight to enter.
Customs is at the commercial wharf....you must clear.

The Harbormaster Nawiliwili Small Boat HarborTel:(808) 245-4586 can direct you. Customs is CLOSED Sunday.

There is an anchorage nearby. It should be free or cheap (13 dollars day)
The UPS Store, Wal Mart, and COSTCO are all within a bike ride. (2 Miles max).

If you guys want to hang out in Hawaii...this is one of the better places and the only place with an anchorage.

Oahu is a one full day (90 mile) sail south

I have you scheduled to get batteries in Oahu on August 6, a Monday.

I have been trying to get a fabricator lined up as well.

I have emails out to two of them...and I will call more on Monday.
No fabrication found on Kuaia. Fabricationsist only found near Honolulu on Oahu.
Maybe we can ship the broken vang parts to a fab guy in Oahu (by UPS) and then
they might be ready when you get there about the 6th....let me know.

The timing needs to be perfect because it is really expensive to stay in Oahu. The boat slips are $130.00 a night!!!

I am still working on anchorages in Oahu....but right now no luck.
I think you can anchor near the airport for 48 hours...but I gotta check.
The transpac just finished and the place is jammed. Pearl Harbor is OFF LIMITS.

So plan on having a nice stay on Kuaia.
Stock up at Costco, Wal Mart, etc.
no need to rent a car....nearly everything is right there.
Cab it maybe.

and importantly.....

We want the cabin sole varnished while in Kuaia. With everybody working...it should take 4 hours max
If you wait....Honolulu will be to rocky and rolly at anchor to do anything.
